This was our second year in a row performing a sketch show in the Upstairs Venue at Opium. We have nothing but positives to report about the venue.

THE SPACE
The Opium stage is a great size for sketch comedy, allowing a cast of five plenty of room to perform with space left to move. Our set only included two chairs and a fold up table which we kept at the back of the stage when not in use. The stage is sufficiently deep that there was still plenty of room. A black curtain was set up at each side of the stage creating two wing areas big enough for all five people to stand in, with further room for props. The only thing to point out is that there is no way from one wing to the other without crossing the stage so props have to be kept on whatever side you are entering from. The room itself can hold over 100 if filled to capacity and the central seating area was usually set up for around 50.

THE STAFF
The staff at Opium were very helpful and happy to give us space to store props, costumes and flyers overnight on premises. In fact, we used food items which would have otherwise gone off so the staff gave us space in the bar fridge to keep the props. Special thanks must go to Deano, the tech at Opium who gave us two tech rehearsals in the week leading up to the beginning of the show and happily teched the show for us every day of the Fringe. The show was fairly SFX heavy so having a tech who knew what he was doing and was familiar with the lights and other equipment was very helpful.

TAKINGS
Average takings increased as the Fringe wore on and the show improved. We began with around £45 on an average day and by the end of the Fringe this figure had gone up to about £65/£70. On a good weekend day, we could make £110. Audience size was rarely under 35. On average the audiences were about 50.

OVERALL
This venue has a good space, is very well equipped and the staff are very friendly. Furthermore, the venue is just at the Grassmarket-end of the Cowgate meaning there is a lot of footfall to increase audience numbers.
