If you do not know the venues, let us choose for you. An application to the Free Fringe is an application to all venues. You can express preferences, but you cannot give an ultimatum. When we offer you a slot, you may accept, decline or negotiate a change.

You can read the real uncensored reports of 2009 and 2008 participants on http://freefringeforum.org and talk to any of them to hear more.

Is there any information for Base yet? I can't seem to really find much out about it, or even if it has an allocated fringe venue number. Cheers, Paulybx

I know that Opium is a new venue for the Free Fringe this year but is there any information on it/does anybody know anything about it? There was a little confusion when registering as it offered an option of 2 spaces within the venue although PBH seemed to think that there was only one. Any information on Opium would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Hi Luke

Opium was only ever one room, but the nearby venue Sin offered 2 rooms which may be where the confusion has come from.

Opium's full address is 71 Cowgate, Edinburgh, EH1 1JW. This is almost directly over the road from Underbelly and immediately next door to Base.

They have advised that their tech spec is - a new Peavey sound system, the lighting rig has power and dmx patch points.Load in is via a staircase to first floor. Power is available via a 32 amp ring main. Please speak to the venue directly is you wish to any of their equipment.

Hopefully that's everything covered, but let me know if you need anything else.

Hello all

I have been advised that BAse has the following-

Base is equipped with a KV2 rig (ES series), a dmx controllable lighting rig (LED Par Cans, Clay Paky moving mirrors). Signal patch points are available on the stage and the dj booth.

A 32 Amp ring main is available from the rig around the stage area. Load in is via a ground level flat corridor.

As with Opium, please speak to the venue directly if you wish to use any of their equipment.

Thanks
Steph

Does anyone have the sheet with more information on the venues as mentioned by PBH above? We're running shows in Fingers Piano Bar and Cabaret Voltaire.

Hi Luke - you can see the address and a map for each venue using the online PBH Free Fringe Programme. A the top left of each forum page, click on the word "Programme" and filter by venue and click on any show.

Also see what people have written about these venues for previous years on the forum here -> Programme » Board index ‹ Previous Years ‹ Show Reports ‹ 2009

Otherwise, it's over to our old friend Google!

Sadly there doesn't appear to be anything written about Cabaret Voltaire in previous years and the tech spec on their website isn't clear to which room they're referring. They've got details for Main Room and Back room, so I don't know whether the back room is Speakeasy or Smaller Downstairs, which is the venue we've got.

I've emailed Tim who appears to do the tech at Cabaret Voltaire and will post any feedback I get on here.

Bar 50 is the bar and common room area of the Smart City Hostel. It is a new venue for this year, so an unknown quantity, but it looks like a good bet. It is a large lounge and bar area, but there is a part to one side which can be partitioned off, and this is what will be used as the venue. The entrance to the venue is through a courtyard off the Cowgate, although the main hostel entrance is on Blackfriars Street. It should be a good location for flyering as you will be on the natural route that people would take when walking between the Underbelly and the Pleasance. Also, you will have a natural audience in folk who are staying at the hostel itself.

Hope that helps.

Hi Shona - re. White Horse, in previous years it has not had any of it's own equipment. It has an excellent back room for comedy and the PBH Free Fringe normally loan it a PA, speakers, mic and stand plus backdrop. A fan or two usually appear quickly as it is an oven when full. I don't know what exact equipment will be loaned this year, but it's safe to assume that it's a basic PA with multiple inputs - do you want to use anything special? It's normally straight forward to plug in an instrument, MP3 player, PC or CD player etc.

Cheers
John
